Xenophobia: Police take over South African businesses in Delta, Kaduna

– Some businesses owned by South Africans in Nigeria have been shut down for the time being
– For instance, Shoprite super store in the Effurun, Uvwie council area of Delta state has been closed till further notice
– Moreover, MTN and Multichoice head offices in Kaduna have been shut down with armed policemen surrounding the premises
Following violent reactions from some Nigerians to xenophobic attacks on their fellow citizens in South Africa, some businesses owned by South Africans in Nigeria have been shut down for security reasons.
One of such investments is the Delta Mall in Effurun, Uvwie council area of the state, which houses Shoprite super store.

The building was surrounded by a lot of security men in a bid to prevent chaos and violence in the area.
One of the staff of the mall informed journalists that workers are yet to be told when the shop will be re-opened.

The worker who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “The mall is closed for now. No shop is opened and we don’t know when we will resume back to work. They said they will call when the mall is reopening, so it may extend beyond tomorrow (Thursday).”

Meanwhile, MTN and Multichoice head offices in Kaduna were on Wednesday, September 4, shut down with heavily armed policeman surrounding the Abakpa area of the state.
Recall that Legit.ng reported that police were reportedly trying to scare away protesters at the premises of Shoprite in Owerri along Egbu road.
The angry youths were said to be attempting an invasion of the business premises which was believed to be owned by South Africans.
The report stated further that the police had been shooting in the air in a bid to repel the angry youths as one of the angry youths said that the police had shot teargas at them severally.
