A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN
The University of Benin was founded in 1970. It started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission [NUC] on 1st July, 1971. In his Budget Speech in April, 1972, the then Military Governor of Mid-Western State,Col. SO. Ogbemudia [then also Visitor to the University] formally announced the change of the name of the Institute of Technology to The University of Benin.
The University of Benin operates two campuses, the Ugbowo campus which is the main campus and Ekenwan satellite campus. Both campuses have witnessed tremendous growth both in infrastructure and population.
Presently, the University essentially operates the Faculty System except for the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences, and Institute of Child Health, which reverted back to the Collegiate System in August, 1999, with a Provost as its administrative head. The Faculties as presently constituted are those of Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Life Science, Pharmacy, Physical Science, Management Sciences, Social Science, and the College of Medical Sciences (which has three Schools: Basic Medical Sciences; Dentistry; and Medicine; and the Institute of Child Health).
The University of Benin offers courses at various levels & Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Diploma and Certificate. Presently, the total” student enrolment stands at about 45,000 made up of both full-time and part-time students shared among the various Faculties and Schools.
University of Benin, Benin City is today an internationally-acclaimed Federal institution in Nigeria that has led the way in academic excellence and hard work. The University is a centre of excellence in the best tradition of producing highly rated scholars and graduates for national and international services. Indeed, the University of Benin is alive to its avowed Mission: Inculcating time-tested and innovative knowledge on our youngsters so as to serve the society remarkably. Evidence abounds in all spheres of life within and outside the country. No wonder university of Benin came first in Nigeria, in the 2011 Webometrics ranking and was declared the best institution in Nigeria.
My dear new students, you are now part of this march for greatness in an institution that is now a leader in Information and Communication Technology (lCT), best practices in academic procedures and a leading light in democratic governance. You are a living testimony of our new resolve for excellence and integrity being reputable products of the Post-University Matriculation Exercise (PUTME). I warmly congratulate you all, and hope you will live up to the expectations we all have of you. You must therefore take advantage of the academic programmes, amenities and services provided by the University, to aid your adjustment, overall welfare and sustain your academic pursuit. I enjoin you to exercise the intellectual privilege you now have at your disposal with utmost caution, discretion and due regard for the needs, right and welfare of both your immediate and the wider community.
The University of Benin has a motto – “Knowledge for Service”.Whatever knowledge you will acquire from this University during’ your stay here will be useless, unless it is put to the service of your community and country.Let this motto be your guiding principle in all your activities so that our society will be the better for it.
I want to assure you of the administration’s untiring efforts in creating and maintaining such conditions as will ensure that you all have a very profitable and enjoyable stay in the University. However, you must reciprocate this commitment in the way you conduct yourselves throughout your stay here. Students should always bear in mind that the most effective way to put across their demands or grievances is through dialogue and through the use of the established channels of communication.
Realizing the complex nature and setting of the University system which could, at times, appear bewildering to freshmen and fresh women, this brochure which contains essential information, has been put together to assist your adjustment to the University environment. I enjoin you, therefore, to read it carefully, and keep it for constant reference.
My dear new students, I wish you all a happy, fruitful and successful sojourn in the University of Benin as you pursue your academic career.
